Ohio State Football: Ohio State has quarterback locked down for years to come
By Alex Austin
Ohio State already has one of the most talented quarterbacks in the game with Justin Fields, but this week showed that the Buckeyes will be set for plenty of years at the quarterback position.
Justin Fields has great odds to win the Heisman, take home a National Championship, and go down as one of the best Ohio State quarterbacks ever this year.
But, before he was a quarterback for the Buckeyes, he participated in the 2017 Elite 11 competition as a senior in high school.
He took home the MVP award that year as the best quarterback of the camp.
In 2019, Elite 11 hosts the same competition, and Ohio State has not only has a commitment on the finalist list (Jack Miller) but also has the MVP of the camp again in CJ Stroud.
This year Ohio State did not have the MVP award winner, but Kyle McCord had a strong showing that proves the Buckeyes’ depth and stability at the most important position on the field.
The scouting report from 247Sports on McCord said:
"He’s just a big dude with big features that generates a lot of horsepower without digging too deep. He’s more Dwayne Haskins than Justin Fields for Ohio State but given all the talent Ohio State has been recruiting at wide receiver, he seems like a perfect trigger man to just sit back, stand tall and deliver."
McCord showed off incredible arm strength throughout the competition, and was really able to showcase is accuracy on Day 2 of the competition.
As we have talked about on a few posts before this, Ohio State is doing very well on the recruiting trail and a large part of that success goes to Brian Hartline filling the wide receivers rooms with an immense amount of talent.
Ryan Day showed with Haskins that he can run an entire offense around a pocket quarterback, just as capably as around a dual-threat guy. The ability to not get bogged down into one type of quarterback will allow Ryan Day to select the best quarterback each year.
If the next Ohio State quarterbacks go Fields, Stroud, Miller, and McCord, Ohio State should not have to worry about any kind of drop off year in and year out.
