Since Kerry Coombs returned to the Ohio State football program he has loaded up the 2021 recruiting class with defensive backs but one has decommitted.

Kerry Coombs hit the ground running on the recruiting trail loading up on defensive backs after rejoining the Ohio State football team but he has now lost one of those commits. It was reported today by Bill Kurelic of 247Sports one of those recruits, Devonta Smith, has had a change of mind and will look to play his college ball elsewhere.

Smith plays for La Salle High School in Cincinnati and is ranked as a three-star corner.

It’s not like the cupboard is bare when it comes to defensive backs in the 2021 Ohio State class though. Here are the corners and safeties in the class with position and overall rankings in the 247Sports Composite.

  • Andre Turrintine (Nashville, TN):  No. 4 Safety, No. 139 overall player
  • Jantzen Dunn (Bowling Green, KY):  No. 11 Safety. (202)
  • Jaylen Johnson (Cincinnati, OH):  No. 23 Safety, (350)

You have to add Denzel Burke in here too. The No. 7 ranked Athlete and the No. 178 overall player is expected to play defense either at safety or corner.

Losing one DB commit won’t hurt too much with this group on board. And with the number of offers out to highly ranked players you can expect at least one will join the class.

My eyes are on the top corner in this year’s class, Tony Grimes. With the way coach Coombs has sent corners to the NFL as first round picks, don’t you think the No. 7 ranked recruit in the country isn’t seriously thinking of playing for the guy.

Next. Is it Justin Fields or bust in 2020?. dark

It’s a long way to go before the 2021 recruiting class is put to bed. Having said that, the DB unit is loaded still and could be more so by Signing Day. Anybody want to bet against coach Coombs bringing in another one or two outstanding players?
