Ohio State football: Ryan Day deserves more respect
By Ryan Stano
It takes a lot to run the Ohio State football program. Head coach Ryan Day doesn’t seem to be getting the respect he deserves nationally for doing just that.
Ohio State football is the biggest thing in the state of Ohio. Everyone loves to watch the program play football on Saturdays in the fall. Being the head coach of Ohio State means you are the most recognizable figure in the entire state, sports or otherwise.
Ryan Day is tasked with running the ship right now. Despite not being an Ohio native or an adopted son like four of the previous five head coaches, Day still understands what is important to Ohio State football fans and what it takes to run a successful program.
Day was able to lead Ohio State to an undefeated regular season in his first full season as the head coach. He has also recruited at an unprecedented level for the history of the program. Yet despite all of this, he doesn’t get the respect he deserves from the national media.
In recent head coaching rankings, Day has been underrated severely. In some of them, he’s not even listed as the best coach in the Big Ten. In CBS Sports’ 2020 coaching rankings for the conference, Day is listed behind James Franklin of Penn State despite him never losing to Franklin.
The fact that people still don’t think that Day is the best coach even in his own conference is, quite frankly, insulting. Day already has a Big Ten Championship, a College Football Playoff appearance, and has the number one recruiting class in the nation for the class of 2021.
There isn’t a single coach in the Big Ten that can tout that resumé except for Day. Most of the lists have him there because he has only coached for one season. While longevity counts for something, Day still should clearly be recognized as the best coach in the conference.
