Ohio State Football: How Justin Fields wins the Heisman
By Alex Austin
Justin Fields was electric in his first season leading the Ohio State football team and had the 3rd most votes for the Heisman. Now, he is entering 2020 as a favorite to win the coveted trophy along with Trevor Lawrence. How does the Ohio State Buckeye bring home the hardware?
Justin Fields will likely have another phenomenal season. With the Ohio State football team having another high flying offense, Fields could be in for a record-breaking year.
Besides stats, there are a few things that will elevate the Buckeye QB this year and give him the best chance to win the Heisman.
Better Competition
Ohio State will face some pretty good teams this year. Standout games against Oregon, Penn State and Michigan will be challenges, and those against Iowa, Indiana and Illinois could be as well.
At first, this might seem that it would be harder to put up numbers like last year if he is facing stiffer competition, and that could be true.
But stiffer competition could mean he is playing more games into the second half. Blowouts would only give Fields two quarters to put up impressive numbers rather than those he registers playing entire games.
Trevor Lawrence (Fields pre-season competition) will likely be sitting the second half out of many games, which could allow more people to see Justin Fields shine.
No J.K. Dobbins
With one of the greatest running backs in Ohio State history J.K. Dobbins leaving, someone has to pick up the slack. Most of the rushing yards will be replaced by the running back room (Trey Sermon, Master Teague, and others), but Justin Fields will take on some of that responsibility as well.
Fields may be asked to do more with his legs this year to keep the running game going. I think a more likely situation is that the Buckeyes look to throw the ball a lot more.
With one of the most talented receiving rooms in the country, Fields will have plenty of options on every play.
Pre-Season Hype
It helps to have some momentum leading into the beginning of a season. The Heisman can obviously be won by players coming out of nowhere, but Fields is going to have lots of eyes on him all year.
This focus will allow people to start a conversation early and often about a Heisman run.
If Justin Fields puts up similar numbers to last year, he will be in the thick of things come award time. With a little more pass calling, and playing the second half of more games, everyone will see how talented Fields is.
