Since taking over the Ohio State football program Ryan Day has excelled on the recruiting trail by using new techniques and old school principles.

When the Ohio State football team was racking up wins last season I wrote that Ryan Day was an old school guy. He may have been running a 21st-century offense but Woody Hayes would have been proud of how physical the Buckeyes were playing.

He is also using the best of the new with the old in recruiting.

It has been widely reported coach Day and his staff has been staying in touch with recruits using new technology. It has paid dividends with the number of players who have committed during the downtime when coaches haven’t been able to visit recruits.

However, much of the success on the recruiting trail is because coach Day also embraces things that worked when a calculator was a high tech instrument.

He has made a conscious effort to bring in Ohio high school players he thinks will be a good fit and then go after talented players throughout the country. That was the approach Woody took.

He also emphasizes what The Ohio State University has to offer which will help a player after their playing days are over. That has been pointed out to recruits from Woody’s day and of course Urban Meyer was big on making sure players got a good education and prepared for life after football.

And while some coaches care more about how recruits perform during spring practices and camps, coach Day and his staff have put importance on how they play on Friday nights. They care more about how a player performs with pads on than how fast they run a 40 in shorts and a T-shirt.

That’s old school recruiting and a reason why coach Day already has 19 outstanding players in his 2021 class.

Ryan Day has already proved he is willing to bring in the best of the new while staying true to what has worked in the past to prepare his team to play at a high level on Saturdays. Now he is mixing the old and the new on the recruiting trail. With that combo, he is about to end up with one of the finest recruiting classes ever.
