Ohio State football: The disappointing career of Demario McCall
By Ryan Stano
Ohio State has tried to get something out of Demario McCall for the last four years and failed. 2020 will be McCall’s last chance to contribute as a Buckeye.
Ohio State recruited Demario McCall as a four-star running back from North Ridgeville back in 2016. He was expected to be the next great running back to roll through Columbus. But so far, that has not been the case for McCall. In fact, he has made very little impact at all at Ohio State.
McCall hasn’t been able to beat out running backs such as Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins. As a running back, McCall hasn’t done much of anything in his first four years. Over that time span, he has only accumulated a total of 553 rushing yards. He’s mainly been buried on the depth chart.
Unfortunately, McCall hasn’t done much more as a receiver. He only has 19 catches for 273 yards in his career. Where most people thought his impact was going to be was in the return game. He has been the primary returner for the Buckeyes for the last two years. That hasn’t resulted in much either.
2020 will be the final year where McCall has a chance to make an impact as a Buckeye. Trey Sermon will be the starting running back as a transfer from Oklahoma. After that though, the depth chart spots are up for grabs. Master Teague‘s injury makes that the case.
McCall will have to beat out Steele Chambers and Marcus Crowley for carries. At this point, that doesn’t seem likely. McCall’s best chance may be as an H-back. That position has not been filled quite yet.
If McCall can’t make an impact there, his career at Ohio State will end up being a waste: all hype and no results. Hopefully he is able to finally use some of that potential to help Ohio State win some games.
