Ohio State Buckeyes basketball 2010s All-Decade team
By Ryan Stano
Center was a position that was played a lot differently at the beginning of the decade than it was at the end. But it was the most important position for both Coach Matta and now Coach Holtman. The starter at this position is the best player of the decade, and that’s Jared Sullinger.
Sullinger played for his hometown team for two seasons early in the decade and made the most of them. In those two seasons, he averaged 17.3 points per game, collected 9.7 rebounds per game, and led the team to the 2012 Final Four.
Sullinger was also a consensus First-Team All-American in both 2011 and 2012. He was the focal point of the offense in both seasons and even started to expand his range a bit his sophomore season, shooting 40% from three while attempting just over one three-pointer a game.
His backup is the most recent center for Ohio State, and that is Kaleb Wesson. Wesson has been the best player the Buckeyes have had for the last two seasons. In his three seasons in Scarlet and Gray, Wesson averaged 12.9 points, 7 rebounds, and shot 38.5% from three.
Wesson’s biggest issue while he was in Columbus was his defense. He fouled way too much his first two seasons but was able to curb that his final year. Being a backup on this team, he wouldn’t need to worry about fouling too much. He would just be out there to score points and rebound well.
