Ohio State Football: OSU lands top DB, looking to add more for 2021
The Ohio State football team is looking to close out the strong 2021 recruiting class with more defensive back prospects.
Defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Kerry Coombs saw a weakness in the secondary room upon coming back to Columbus for his second stint at Ohio State. Losing key players to the NFL, unsuccessful recruiting and having a few suspensions to key depth players made looking at the defensive back roster difficult to bear for Coombs.
But in one quick offseason, Coombs has helped change the narrative. After already securing five defensive back prospects for the 2021 class, the Buckeyes landed another one last week in four-star-recruit Denzel Burke from Scottsdale, Arizona. The No. 183 overall player in the class according to 247Sports, chose Ohio State over Arizona, Arizona State and Auburn.
But after landing an unbelievable amount of talent already, Coombs and company may not be done just yet. Jaylin Davies, another four-star cornerback recruit has announced his final list of four schools which include the Buckeyes, Arizona State, USC and Oregon.
If Ohio State can land the six-foot-one corner from Mater Dei High School in California, that would give the Scarlet and Gray the infusion of young talent that they needed in the secondary room. And it gives Kerry Coombs a lot of talent to play with.
The Buckeyes are also still in on five-star corner Tony Grimes from Virginia Beach but it looks like his recruitment is coming down to North Carolina and Georgia.
No matter what happens here on out for the rest of the class, the Buckeyes have surely secured a haul of new talent in the secondary for the 2021 recruiting cycle. And with the Buckeyes already off to a fast start in 2022, Ohio State’s proclaimed label of ‘DBU’ looks to be set in stone for the foreseeable future.
