One area on the Ohio State football team that was affected when spring practices were canceled was the passing game, now it should be fine.

After losing three senior wide receivers from last year’s Ohio State football team you know head coach Ryan Day wanted to work on the passing game during the spring. Everybody knows that didn’t happen.

It has been widely reported players will be coming back soon and that should help the aerial attack during the upcoming season. Even though quarterback Justin Fields is a Heisman favorite heading into the season and the receiving corps is loaded with talent, they haven’t had much time to work together.

Just take a look at the talented freshmen with their rankings in the 247Sports Composite coach Day wants his QB to become familiar with.

  • Julian Fleming, No. 1 WR (No. 3 overall player)
  • Jaxon Smith-Njigba, No. 5 WR (28)
  • Gee Scott Jr., No. 10 (65)
  • Mookie Cooper, No. 16 WR (91)

These talented receivers have to get in sync with Fields but a couple of sophomores will as well.

Garrett Wilson, the No. 2 WR in the 2019 recruiting class, was outstanding as a true freshman catching 30 passes for 432 yards and 5 touchdowns. But it was widely reported coach Day has him pegged as a slot receiver this year.

To learn how to run effective inside routes instead of ones on the outside, Wilson needs receivers coach Brian Hartline working with him.

Jameson Williams showed promise last year as well averaging 18.7 yards per catch on his 6 receptions. I have a feeling he could be a weapon for Fields but needs plenty of reps before fall camp begins.

With this talented group of receivers coming back to work with their QB in June will certainly help the Ohio State passing game this fall. There is no substitute for a quarterback and his receivers getting on the same page, regardless of how talented they are.
