Justin Fields proved to be one of the best players in college football during the 2019 season. Now the QB is a leading candidate to win the Heisman Trophy.

Despite coming up short in the Heisman voting after his outstanding season Justin Fields will be the favorite to win the trophy this season.

According to early Heisman Trophy odds, as reported by SI.com, Fields is the favorite to win with the odds of 7/2. He is the only returning finalist from last season. The Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting.

Clemson’s QB Trevor Lawrence checks in behind Fields with the 2nd best odds to win the Heisman at 4/1. Presumptively the 2021 No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick, Lawrence really hasn’t made a legitimate case for the Heisman Trophy during his career.

He got off to slow start in 2019, struggling to make plays down the field and throwing five interceptions in his first three games, before picking up his game and finishing strong.

Rounding out the Top 5 Heisman favorites, Jamie Newman the transfer QB from Wake Forest will look to make a case for himself as Georgia’s starter this season. He has the 3rd best odds coming in at 10/1. Newman threw for 2,868 yards and 26 touchdowns last season for the Demon Deacons.

Oklahoma QB Spencer Rattler 12/1 and Texas QB Sam Ehlinger 18/1 check in behind the top three favorites. Rattler hasn’t started a game in his college career, but Lincoln Riley’s tutelage should be a definite advantage for the redshirt freshman.

During his first three seasons as the Sooners head coach, Riley has developed two Heisman winners, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, and a runner up in Jalen Hurts.

Sam Ehlinger will look to begin a Heisman campaign during his fourth season as the Longhorns starter. Along with the 3,663 passing yards and 32 touchdowns in 2019, Ehlinger has the experience and intangibles to produce Heisman type stats this season. But, will he have enough firepower to beat out the dynamic playmakers ahead of him?

These five favorites will all be exciting to watch this season. But Fields and Newman should make bold statements as they compete for the Heisman.

Their dual-threat abilities to attack opposing defenses with both their strong arms and legs make them the two top contenders. If Justin Fields has a more productive season for the Buckeyes than in 2019, it will be hard for the field to take the Heisman Trophy away from him this year.
