The Ohio State football team landed one of its top targets for the 2022 class over this past weekend.

The recruiting engine just doesn’t stop in Columbus, Ohio as the Ohio State football team and coach Ryan Day landed another major commitment over the weekend. Top 2022 linebacker/safety prospect C.J. Hicks announced his verbal commitment the Scarlet and Gray.

The four-star recruit from Dayton makes it a total of three commitments to the 2022 class as he joins Tegra Tshabola and Jyaire Brown.

Starting recruiting classes with strong Ohio ties seems to be a staple of Ryan Day’s focus early in gathering recruits for a class. And it seems to be working with the 2021 and 2022 recruiting classes respectively. Being able to lock in Ohio’s best high school football players and keeping that fence around the state is obviously a great tactic for coach Day to employ.

While Urban Meyer did a fabulous job of recruiting Ohio during his tenure, the focus was more toward national recruits allowing that fence around Ohio to be breached a few times.

Hicks was landed by linebacker coach Al Washington and offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson as Hicks projects early as a linebacker. He follows the style of 2020 prospect Kourt Williams, as he was brought into Ohio State as a hybrid linebacker/safety.

Hicks originally wanted to go through the recruiting process and make official visits to his top schools but he changed his mind over the month of April. This from Lettermen Row:

"“I had a visit online with all the coaches last week,” Hicks told Lettermen Row . “It just feels like they can help me become the man that I need to be in life.”"

The Buckeyes are still very much in play for securing early verbal commitments from fellow Ohio prospects Gabe Powers from Marysville and Strongsville native Blake Miller. So keep it locked into Scarlet and Game for more recruiting information.
