Outstanding recruits and transfers are joining the Ohio State basketball team but before yesterday Chris Holtmann had one more hole to fill, and he did.

Yesterday Abel Porter announced via Twitter he would play for the Ohio State basketball team next season. The graduate transfer from Utah State will give head coach Chris Holtmann another experienced point guard, filling the last position of need.

Recently forward Seth Towns announced he would join the team and he will be eligible to play next season. Guard Jimmy Sotos is also transferring to Ohio State but will have to sit a year. Coach Holtmann needed another point guard to go along with C.J. Walker for next season and found one.

Last season Porter averaged 5.6 points and 3.2 points last season for the Aggies. Having a fifth year senior point guard is certainly a plus for the Buckeyes.

In coach Holtmann’s first season as head coach of the Buckeyes he had success with graduate transfer Andrew Dakich coming off the bench to spell C.J. Jackson. Even though Dakich’s stats weren’t overly impressive, 3 points and 2.1 assists per game, the offense flowed when he was on the court.

Dakich also seemed to make at least one big play on either end of the floor almost every game. If Porter becomes that kind of player for Ohio State he will be a big asset.

Coach Holtmann had done a great job of loading up on forwards with Towns, transfer Justice Sueing, who will be eligible next season, and freshman Zed Key. He has plenty of shooting guards with Duane Washington, Justin Ahrens, Musa Jallow and incoming freshman Eugene Brown, and some of them can slide to the three spot when Ohio State goes small.

But coach Holtmann needed another point guard for next season and he found one. The last piece of the puzzle has been placed and now the 2020-21 Ohio State basketball season looks to be a promising one.
