Ryan Day was a terrific offensive coordinator before taking over as head coach of the Ohio State football team, but it’s obvious he wants a strong defense as well.

Even though Urban Meyer was known as an offensive guru he always loaded his Ohio State football team with outstanding defensive players. Ryan Day learned well under coach Meyer and is doing the same.

Here is a look at coach Day’s defensive players in the 2020 recruiting class and those on board in this year’s class so far.

Let’s first look at Larry Johnson’s defensive linemen.

2020 recruiting class

  • DT Darrion Henry 6 ft. 4, 279 pounds
  • DT Jacolbe Cowen 6 ft 5, 262
  • SDE Ty Hamilton 6 ft. 3, 250

Henry and / or Cowen could end up playing defensive end because they are athletic pass rushers.

2021 class:

DE Jack Sawyer is the No. 3 overall recruit in the class. Mike Hall is the No. 8 DT. Don’t you think coach J loves to have these players coming to town?

All of the linebackers are ranked as four-stars.

2020:

  • Kourt Williams No. 12 ILB
  • Cody Simon No. 4 ILB
  • Mitchell Melton No. 24 OLB

2021:

  • Reid Carrico No. 2 ILB

Coach Day had a good group of defensive backs in the 2020 class with safeties Ryan Watts and Lathan Ransom as well as cornerback Lejond Cavasos and Cameron Martinez who is expected to play somewhere in the back end of the defense.

In the 2021 class there are two safeties, Jaylen Johnson and Andre Turrentine, and cornerbacks Jakallin Johnson and Devonta Smith.

Next. Big Ten recruiting picking up. dark

Like Urban Meyer, coach Ryan Day is an offensive guru but understands he has to load his team with plenty of talent on the other side of the ball. Coach Day has certainly done that so far.
