When head coach Urban Meyer stepped down after the 2018 season most thought the Ohio State football team would take a step back. That certainly hasn’t been the case.

When Ryan Day took over the Ohio State football program many thought the Michigan Wolverines were the favorite to win the Big Ten. And the Buckeyes’ recruiting was probably going to take a hit.

Neither was the case. Ohio State went 12-0 in the regular season, won the Big Ten Championship and just came up short against the Clemson Tigers in the College Football Playoff semi-final.

And Ryan Day’s first recruiting class finished No. 5 in the 247Sports Composite. Now the Buckeye head coach has taken things up a notch.

Ohio State is off to an historic pace in this year’s recruiting race, the class is currently ranked No. 1 in the 247Sports Composite and terrific players have been added lately. Coach Day already has 15 commits which is two more than No. 3 ranked Florida and four more than No. 4 North Carolina.

The only other highly ranked schools with at least 10 recruits are No. 2 Clemson and No. 9 Maryland. The Tigers do have a slight player average advantage, 95.59 vs. 95.34, but that’s to be expected with five fewer players committed. However, coach Day has two more five-star recruits and one more ranked as a  four-star.

By the way, the Michigan recruiting class is ranked No. 17 with only four commits. This after losing to Ohio State 56-27 in ‘The Game’  last year. I guess Jim Harbaugh isn’t exactly taking over the Big Ten as some expected would happen with Urban Meyer moving on.

I’ll have more to say about recruiting coming soon. You can bet plenty of it will have to do with Ryan Day and his coaching staff.
