With most fans just being happy that spring ball is underway, attention on the recruiting trail is ever important for Ryan Day’s Ohio State football team.

Ohio State has their eyes on many recruits for the 2021 cycle, but perhaps none are bigger than Donovan Edwards. Edwards is a running back out of Michigan and is the top offensive player out of Michigan in this recruiting class.

Not only is he one of the top players in Michigan, he is the third best running back in the entire nation according to 247 Sports.

With the recent panic about the lack of depth in the running back room for Ohio State, Tony Alford needs to come through and deliver in a big way in 2021.

The best way to do that? Take the best player away from a top rival.

Michigan is heavily in pursuit of Edwards, and for good reason. He would immediately provide a three down tailback the Wolverines could rely on for a few years.

This would be unfortunate for the Buckeyes to have to defend every year.

On the flip slide, Ohio State could further put the route on by taking the top Michigan offensive prospect. Edwards has a higher ranking than the last Buckeye great to come from the backyard of the Wolverines, Mike Weber.

Ohio State is always looking for ways to best That Team Up North, and show recruits all over the nation the Wolverines can’t keep homegrown talent would be a dagger. With the struggles Michigan has had against Ohio State, and top rated teams in general, bringing in top recruits is a must.

Recruiting should always come down to what player will be best for your program and help you win, not solely on trying to keep kids away from rivals. But when one player accomplishes both purposes, that ends up being a big win.
