Ohio State Football: Haskins deserves more of a chance with Redskins
By David Wysong
Former quarterback for the Ohio State football team Dwayne Haskins was drafted in the first round by the Redskins last year. Could he already be benched?
The Washington Redskins have the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft in addition to having a new head coach in Ron Rivera. Just last year, the Redskins drafted former quarterback for the Ohio State football team Dwayne Haskins with the 15th overall pick.
While the Redskins are also projected to select former Ohio State defensive end Chase Young with the No. 2 pick, could they pass up on him and get a quarterback? This would not only be passing up on one of the greatest Buckeyes of all-time in Young, but would potentially bench a former great Buckeye QB in Haskins.
They could, in fact, do this too.
According to ESPN, Rivera told the media at the NFL scouting combine on Wednesday that hosting former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow in pre-draft visits goes beyond doing due diligence.
This is also what Rivera said.
"“Everything is an option,” Rivera said. “We’re not closing the door on anything.”"
I think not giving Haskins a chance after one season is a poor, knee-jerk reaction to him not having immense success in his rookie season.
In 2019 on a very bad team, Haskins threw for 1,365 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. That is really not that bad.
Peyton Manning is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, and he threw 26 touchdowns and 28 interceptions in his rookie season – seven touchdowns and seven interceptions through nine games in a bad situation is not that bad.
Let’s not forget, Haskins had a monster year in 2018 for the Ohio State Buckeyes, on his way to becoming a Heisman Trophy finalist. In 14 games for the Buckeyes, Haskins threw for 4,831 yards, 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions. That’s, I think, comparable to Burrow’s stats as a fifth-year senior for LSU as he threw for 5,671 yards in 15 games, in addition to 60 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Haskins did not have the best year for the Redskins last year, but he is a very talented quarterback that wants to win. His college stats should be enough of an argument for why he deserves more of a chance. If the Redskins choose not to give him one, I think they will regret it.
