Ryan Day, head football coach for the Ohio State football team, will reportedly sign an extension to keep him with the Buckeyes through the 2026 season.

Pending approval from the Board of Trustees, the Ohio State football program’s head coach Ryan day is set to receive a three-year contract extension, according to 247Sports.

This is great news for the OSU program after Day led the Buckeyes to an undefeated regular season record in 2019, a Big Ten Championship title and a berth into the College Football Playoff. Keeping consistency at the top of the program is great for the stability of the program, especially in one that plans to be fighting for a national championship year after year.

However, the biggest positive from this could be on the recruiting side of things.

In the 2020 recruiting cycle, Ohio State was No. 5 in the entire country for its 2020 class, according to 247Sports. Above the Buckeyes were Georgia (No. 1), Alabama (No. 2), Clemson (No. 3), and LSU (No. 4). All of those programs have their coaches locked up for the future.

Georgia’s Kirby Smart is set to be with the Bulldogs through at least the 2024 season, according to AL.com, while Alabama’s Nick Saban is set to be with the Crimson Tide through the 2025 season, also according to AL.com. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney will be in charge there through the 2028 season according to AL.com while LSU’s Ed Orgeron will be at LSU through 2026, according to the LA Times.

Having top-tier coaches and top-tier recruiters, of course, always help with recruiting. The reputations of the programs help too. Alabama and Ohio State are known for being great programs, of course recruits want to go there. However, I think this proves that stability in a program also helps. No high school athlete wants to commit to a school just for that coach to get up and leave them.

Signing Day to an extension is big for many reasons, but the impact it has on the recruiting trail may prove to be the most important.
