The Ohio State football team has a five-star quarterback verbal commitment for the 2021 recruiting class.

Quarterback Kyle McCord from St. Josephs’ Prep in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania earned a five-star ranking from 247Sports last week.  With the additions of Jack Miller and CJ Stroud to  the quarterback room this past recruiting cycle, Ohio State will have a very young but talented quarterback unit next season, assuming Justin Fields heads to the NFL.

McCord is one of the best quarterback prospects to ever commit to Ohio State. The No. 23 overall player in the 2021 recruiting class, McCord has been a Buckeye verbal commit since last April. Here is part of his evaluation from 247Sports.com:

"Wide-shouldered frame with good height and size. Strong arm and accurate. Spins ball well. Poised under pressure. Great leadership qualities. Plays with high IQ. Can throw 15-yard out on line. Touch to throw over linebackers on intermediate routes. Has quick release with good arm angle. Fits balls into tight windows. Accurate throwing on run. Moves in pocket. Extends plays."

Again, assuming that Fields leaves after next season, the battle for the starting quarterback position in 2021 is shaping up to be a good one. Yes, Kyle McCord would have a huge mountain to climb in surpassing both Stroud and Miller after both of them will have a one year head start within the program, but you can not count him out as talented as he is.

It would be truly shocking to see a true freshman under center for Ohio State, but the reality is that we are one injury away from that happening this season in 2020. The way recruiting and the transfer rules are happening these days, quarterbacks are asked to play a lot sooner than ever before.

Can McCord shock the world and surpass Miller and Stroud as the starter for next season? If any player can do it, it would be him.

McCord is the most talented quarterback prospect to commit since Terrelle Pryor. And if neither Miller or Stroud can separate themselves in their first seasons in the program, McCord might just show up ready to take the position and run with it.
