Ohio State Football: Garrett Wilson projected to be a top WR superstar
By David Wysong
The Ohio State football team’s WR corps is loaded for the 2020 college football season, and one pass-catcher is projected to be one of the best in the country.
Justin Fields will have plenty of weapons in the 2020 season as the Ohio State football team brings back Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson in addition to adding two of the top 2020 WR recruits in Julian Fleming and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. One of these guys I mentioned is projected to be a superstar in 2020.
Bleacher Report projected college football’s top 10 wide receiver superstars for the 2020 season on Thursday and while North Carolina’s Dazz Newsome ranked No. 1 – which may be a surprise to some – the Buckeyes’ Garrett Wilson ranked No. 6 on this list.
Wilson had a fantastic freshman season and really showed glimpses of what he can be. He went on to catch 30 passes for the Buckeyes for 432 yards and five touchdowns. If he follows suit of another freshman receiver in 2018 who had a big sophomore year in 2019 in Chris Olave, Wilson could have a huge 2020.
This is what Bleacher Report’s Brad Shepard had to say about Wilson in his rankings.
"Though Olave put up better numbers, Wilson is perhaps the better all-around receiver. He can do everything you want at the position, and though he isn’t the biggest receiver, he plays bigger than his size and is a highlight-reel play waiting to happen."
We saw plenty of highlight-reel plays from Wilson in 2019, including the big catch against Clemson that saw him soar high in the air over the Tigers’ cornerback and then come down with the catch inside the 10-yard-line. With a bigger workload in 2020 as Binjimen Victor and K.J. Hill were seniors, we will probably see even more highlight-reel plays in 2020.
The full top 10 on Bleacher Report’s list is as follows: 1. Dazz Newsome, North Carolina; 2. Ja’Marr Chase, LSU; 3. DeVonta Smith, Alabama; 4. Justyn Ross, Clemson; 5. Tylan Wallace, Oklahoma State; 6. Garrett Wilson, Ohio State; 7. Rondale Moore, Purdue; 8. Rashod Bateman, Minnesota; 9. George Pickens, Georgia; 10. Amon-Ra St. Brown, USC.
All of the guys listed above have the potential to have huge years in 2020. However, with arguably the best quarterback in all of college football Justin Fields throwing to Wilson, he could maybe become the No. 1 WR superstar in 2020.
