Ohio State Football: How much better will Justin Fields be?
The Ohio State football team is busy with offseason workouts and conditioning. Let’s get a jump-start on Justin Fields for the 2020 season.
Quarterback Justin Fields is entering his second full offseason in the Buckeyes program. After a stellar first year in which he came to Ohio State via transfer from Georgia, Fields put up one of the best statistical seasons in Buckeye history for a quarterback.
Much will be expected from Fields next season, but how much better can he get in year two under Ryan Day? The Buckeye head coach is just excited to have a quarterback come back to start a second season. Here is what he told Lettermen Row:
"“I thought from game one all the way to the last game he really improved,” Day said. “So it’s exciting that we’re going to have him back. That’s what’s so exciting. With so many quarterbacks I feel like over the last eight years, I haven’t had a quarterback that’s started and then come back and had another year with them. This is the first time I’ve had it, since I can remember. So that’s exciting.”"
It is going to be really interesting to see the growth with Justin Fields in a full offseason with Ryan Day, Corey Dennis and Kevin Wilson coaching him up. Fields is already a front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, and with another stellar season he should solidify himself as a first round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
I would expect to see a healthy Justin Fields improve most from understanding the quarterback position in major college football. Too often last season Fields held onto the ball way too long looking for a play down the field.
Taking too many sacks was a problem of his last season. If he can clean that up, take fewer hits and either run, check the ball down to a back or throw it away, Fields can truly become an elite quarterback.
He can also use a little better touch on his deep passes but that is getting a little bit picky. For now, Fields just needs to soak up everything the coaches are telling him to do and he will be just fine. Look for an incredible season behind center from Justin Fields in 2020.
