Ohio State Football: Is OSU in danger of losing Kerry Coombs?
The Ohio State football team recently hired Kerry Coombs as co-defensive coordinator / secondary coach. Are the Buckeyes in danger of losing him before they even get to spring ball?
Mark Dantonio stepped down as head coach of the Michigan State Spartans on Tuesday afternoon amidst reports of scandalous activity on the recruiting trail, according to MLive.com. Dantonio spent 13 productive seasons building the Michigan State program into a respectable and perennial Big Ten threat. He even ruined two of Urban Meyer’s seasons while at Ohio State.
Reports have surface that Cincinnati head coach and former Buckeye defensive coordinator Luke Fickell would be a leading candidate to replace Dantonio at Michigan State. With back-to-back 11 win seasons under his belt it is easy to see why the Spartans would welcome him to East Lansing. And if Fickell were to take the job, that could spell trouble for Ohio State.
Newly appointed Buckeye co-defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs could be in position to take over the Cincinnati program if Fickell were to leave. The Cincinnati native and former Bearcat assistant coach under now Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly, Coombs may jump at the chance to finally be a head coach in major college football. Especially at a program that seems to be in good health and that he has many ties to.
Now in order for Luke Fickell to leave the program he has built, he would absolutely want a massive contract from Michigan State. Taking over a program that seems to be in some uncertainty NCAA violation wise, Fickell would want to be compensated.
But it wasn’t that long ago where Urban Meyer helped lead a program back from NCAA violations and into a national contender in just one season. And Luke Fickell was right there and a part of that as well.
It would be a massive blow to Ohio State for all this to come to fruition. As Buckeye fans, lets hope it doesn’t turn out this way.
