Ohio State Football: Kerry Coombs hit the ground running
It didn’t take long for Kerry Coombs to make an impact after returning to the Ohio State football program securing a commitment from a prized DB.
During his first stint with the Ohio State football program as cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs became known as one of the top recruiters in the country. He quickly proved he hasn’t lost his touch on the recruiting trail after coaching in the NFL for two seasons.
Yesterday Cameron Martinez announced on Twitter he will honor his commitment to the Buckeyes’ 2020 recruiting class. He was the lone commit who didn’t officially join the class during the Early Signing Period.
Martinez decided to keep his options open until the Ohio State defensive backs coaching situation was resolved as he is projected to play on that side of the ball. It was reported by Bill Kurelic of 247Sports that Ryan Day, Matt Barnes and coach Coombs had visited Martinez recently. Apparently that was all that was needed for him to choose to wear the Scarlet and Gray.
Martinez was named the Michigan High School Player of the Year twice by MLive Media Group. He is ranked as the 14th best athlete in this year’s recruiting class and the No. 325 player overall.
Martinez reaffirming his commitment is huge for the Buckeyes. Not only because he is a talented player but it was important to land another DB in this recruiting cycle. Damon Arnette, Jordan Fuller and Jeffrey Okudah are moving on to the NFL and there are other defensive backs who more than likely will after next season.
Martinez joins a talented group of four-star DBs in this year’s class with Lathon Ransom, Ryan Watts and Lejond Cavazos already signed.
Now that it appears the 2020 recruiting class is finished it’s full go for Ryan Day’s No. 2 ranked 2021 class. It will be interesting to see how many highly ranked defensive backs want to jump on board.
With Coombs back in town coaching both corners and safeties there should be plenty of talented players wanting to wear the Scarlet and Gray. Learning from coach Coombs certainly gives a DB a good chance of playing on Sundays.
