No. 11 Purdue University

After beating Ohio State in 2018 it seemed as if Purdue was poised to make a jump in the Big Ten. However, last season was disastrous.

Finishing 4-8 overall, even with some injuries, was a massive disappointment. Having Jeff Brohm as head coach gives Purdue a chance to become a good Big Ten program. It just might take a few more seasons.

No. 12 University of Illinois

Coach Lovie Smith had his team moving last season. Beating Wisconsin was a huge win for the program and getting to 6-7 on the season was a big improvement. It just isn’t big enough to move them from below average to average in the rankings.

Also, finishing dead last in the Big Ten recruiting rankings doesn’t help matters.

Bad Programs

No. 13 University of Maryland

Is it a coincidence that the two new east-coast schools are dead last in the Big Ten power rankings? Maryland had an abysmal season in 2019 as coach Mike Locksley looks to build his program from the ground up.

Maryland did finish with the No. 28 overall recruiting class so maybe the future is looking brighter for the Terps’.

No. 14 Rutgers University

Rutgers had one of the worst seasons in Big Ten history in 2019. With only two wins versus Liberty and U-Mass, Rutgers can only go up from here. But there is some hope as Greg Schiano returns to try to save this depleted program.
