Ohio State Football: Welcome back Kerry Coombs
The Ohio State football team welcomes back Kerry Coombs as its new co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach.
The Tennessee Titans loss in yesterday’s AFC Championship games spelled good news for Ohio State fans everywhere. Coach Kerry Coombs is coming back to Columbus with two seasons of NFL experience under his belt, including a lengthy run in this year’s playoffs.
It was reported by Austin Ward of Letterman Row and Bill Rabinowitz of the Columbus Dispatch the energetic Coombs is expected to be coming back just in time as recruiting for the 2021 class is starting to heat up. His wealth of knowledge from coaching at the highest level the past two seasons will only further enhance his already excellent recruiting abilities.
Coombs would take over Jeff Hafley’s spot in Ohio State’s secondary room as he was announced as Boston College’s head coach a few weeks ago. Kerry of course served as secondary coach under Urban Meyer from 2012 trough 2017.
He was responsible for developing the likes of Denzel Ward, Marshon Lattimore, Gareon Conley, Bradley Roby, Vonn Bell and many more Scarlet and Gray secondary players who are littered throughout the NFL.
Coombs jumped to Mike Vrabel’s Tennessee Titans staff in 2018 after it was clear he was stuck in his role at Ohio State with no room for advancement. Seizing a golden opportunity, Coombs helped lead and develop the Titans secondary into a formidable unit.
Coming back to Columbus for a second time with the newly added co-defensive coordinator title, Coombs is probably looking for an opportunity to run a program of his own one day. If he passes his next test of being able to run a top college defense, then a head coaching job will be in his future.
Coombs has his work cut out for him this week as he starts his new job. His first task will be to get in front of four-star commit Cam Martinez and secure his spot in the 2020 class. Martinez withheld from signing early so he could see who the Buckeyes would bring in as the new secondary coach.
Other recruiting trips will be in store for Coombs as well. Top of that list will be his hometown native running back Corey Kiner. Coombs is a former Cincinnati area high school football coach and is sure to get in front of Kiner and develop that relationship. Welcome back Kerry Coombs, your office is ready for you!
