The Ohio State Football team is the consensus No. 2 team to start the 2020 season based on several way-to-early polls with Clemson sitting at No. 1. Another showdown between these two powerhouses could be shaping up for next season.

Ohio State is looking to start high in the rankings when the 2020 season begins. Matt Hinton compiled a great graphic showing where teams are ranking in several way-to-early top 25 polls, and the Buckeyes claim the spot at #2.

One thing to look at with this compilation is where the other Big Ten teams sit. With Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota in the top 15 the conference looks really strong.

Using Matt’s chart the SEC leads the way with 6 teams in the top 15. The Big Ten is right behind with 5. The ACC, Pac-12 and Big 12 all have 1 with Notre Dame ranked as well.

As you can see there is a huge drop off in conference strengths (again according to very early rankings). This could bode well for Ohio State being able to take a loss and still make the playoffs.

Another item to look at in these rankings is the teams at the top. The Buckeyes sit at No 2, right behind the team that ended their season, the Clemson Tigers.

This should not come as too much of a surprise for anyone. Both of these teams have been in the top-tier of college football the past decade.

And both teams feature a returning phenom at quarterback. The position has quickly become the most important one on the field in most people’s opinion.

With so much turnover happening at other big programs (Alabama, LSU, Oregon and Oklahoma) it makes sense that Ohio State and Clemson get the nod here.

Justin Fields and Trevor Lawrence are arguably the best two quarterbacks in college football right now (as evidenced by the Vegas odds for Heisman) and it should be exciting to watch that battle.

Next. 3 defensive players who could be All-Americans. dark

I know many Ohio State football fans would also be excited (and nervous) to see a rematch with Clemson after the Fiesta Bowl loss. While there is still a long way to go, the college football giants look to be on track for another collision at the end of the 2020 season.
