Ohio State Football: 3 transfer portal players to watch at corner
The Ohio State football team is losing three starting players in its secondary. The transfer portal can help provide some much-needed depth.
The transfer portal can be used as a key tool for the Ohio State football team moving forward. It is a new concept to college football and it can be used to fill roster voids when in need.
The Buckeyes and coach Ryan Day are most certainly in need of some depth in the secondary. Losing three starters and position coach Jeff Hafley, the Buckeyes are going to need to reload that room.
The Scarlet and Gray did a good job after losing Hafley in keeping most of their secondary recruiting class around. They did, however, lose a big-time prospect in Clark Phillips who could have seen immediate action as a true freshman.
The need for more depth at corner is imperative. There are a few options available to them in the transfer portal so let’s take a look.
Former four-star prospect and former Buckeye recruit Scooby Carter seems to be a logical choice to fill this need. Carter, who enrolled at Alabama, was the No. 91 overall prospect in the 2019 class. Having played in Alabama’s secondary could be considered an advantage knowing that he received some very good coaching.
However, it sounds that Carter had some off the field issues and he was actually suspended for the Mississippi State game this past season for not attending class, according to si.com. So would Ohio State want that sort of baggage around Columbus? The talent is there with Carter but Ryan Day would have to figure out if he would be a good fit off the field for the Buckeyes.
Also in the portal is Obi Eboh, who has been at Stanford since 2016 and has graduated. He too was looked at by Ohio State during the 2016 recruiting cycle.
The Southlake, Texas native is a tall corner who should figure right into the two-deep of the Buckeye depth chart after recording 24 tackles and one pass defended this past season. Eboh may be the best fit for the Silver Bullets due to his experience.
Lastly, Pitt graduate transfer Therran Coleman might be on the Buckeyes’ radar as well. Playing mostly as a second team cover corner, Coleman possesses the size and experience Ohio State might be looking for in this portal.
The Pittsburgh native stands at six-feet-tall and was a three-star recruit in the 2016 recruiting class. Coleman appeared in 34 games for the Pitt Panthers during his career and finished with 18 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble.
There are your three players to watch in the transfer portal. Time will tell if the Buckeyes can reel these guys into the program.
