Ryan Day has a big hole to fill on his Ohio State football team with co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley leaving. Will Kerry Coombs return to fill the position?

During his time as an assistant coach for the Ohio State football team Kerry Coombs was arguably the best in college football. Now he is having plenty of success in the NFL.

Coach Coombs is in the midst of preparing his secondary to defend one of the most dynamic offenses in the NFL as the Tennessee Titans will take on the Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. This is after the Titans’ secondary held New England Patriots QB Tom Brady to no touchdowns and one pick-six to seal a 20-13 win in the Wild Card Round last weekend.

Coombs’ unit will be put to the test against a Ravens offense led by NFL MVP candidate Lamar Jackson. In his second season as Tennessee’s secondary coach there is one question that surrounds him. Will coach Coombs return to the Buckeyes?

Jeff Hafley, former Ohio State co-defensive coordinator, has left the door wide open for coach Coombs to return to the Buckeyes after becoming the head coach at Boston College.

Coombs has over 35 years of coaching experience at all levels including high school, college and now the NFL. Before teaming up with Titans’ head coach Mike Vrabel in 2017, Coombs spent the previous six seasons (2012-2017) at Ohio State as cornerbacks coach, special teams coordinator and assistant defensive coordinator.

Known for his tremendous ability to recruit and develop cornerbacks, he’s been the catalyst to the development of several first round NFL Draft picks and NFL stars including Denzel Ward, Marshon Lattimore, Gareon Conley, Eli Apple and Bradley Roby.

The opportunity for Coombs to come back to Ohio State would allow him to return to his home state as well as be a co-defensive coordinator for the first time in his outstanding coaching career. For the Buckeyes, Coombs’ recruiting presence will be an even greater asset now that he has NFL coaching experience on his resume.

dark. Next. 3 under the radar Buckeyes poised to have a big year

The return of coach Coombs would not only sustain the success of the Silver Bullets but would personally give him the defensive coordinating experience needed to become a head coach himself in the future. And Buckeye fans would love to see the energetic coach return home.
