Ohio State Football: This loss hurts more than just another loss
By David Wysong
The Ohio State football team’s 2019 season is over. For me and all OSU fans, this season ended sooner than we wanted, and not the way we wanted it to.
On Saturday the Ohio State football team fell in the final moments to the Clemson Tigers in the Fiesta Bowl. This was not supposed to happen.
Yes, the Tigers are the undefeated reigning national champions. Yes, they have a future top NFL Draft pick at quarterback in Trevor Lawrence and several other top NFL prospects all over the field, but this was supposed to be Ohio State’s best team ever.
Not only had they played excellent all year, but the Buckeyes also had all-time greats all over the field.
Justin Fields might be the best quarterback to ever play for Ohio State and he had a historic year for the Buckeyes. Running back J.K. Dobbins cemented his legacy as one of the best running backs in OSU history, being the school’s second all-time leading rusher and the only Buckeye back to run for 2,000 yards in a season.
The Buckeyes also had K.J. Hill, the school’s all-time leader in receptions, to go with other talented receivers in Chris Olave, Binjimen Victor, and Garrett Wilson. This was an all-time great offense with all the talent in the world.
This defense was also stacked. Chase Young is the best defensive player to ever wear scarlet and gray, finishing the season as a Heisman finalist. The unit also had several future top picks in Shaun Wade, Jordan Fuller, Jeffrey Okudah, and others.
This team was too talented to lose. This was not supposed to happen.
But it did, and it was not their fault.
Yes, there were a couple of mental mistakes made and a couple dropped touchdown passes. However, if the officiating made the correct calls on the third-down targeting hit that ejected Wade, as well as the scoop and score on defense, then Ohio State would be preparing for the national championship.
It is one thing to lose because you’re not good enough, it is another thing to lose when you are good enough but officials from the SEC make blatant mistakes to cost you the game.
I woke up this morning with an empty feeling that I am sure all Ohio State fans feel, as well as all the players on the team. The Buckeyes should be playing for a national championship. This was too good of a team to lose this early.
