The Ohio State football team lost co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley over the weekend. Linebackers coach Al Washington doesn’t appear headed to BC with him though.

It sounds like the Buckeyes got some good news when it comes to their coaching staff. Speculation ran wild over the weekend that Jeff Hafley, who just took the head coaching position at Boston College in case you haven’t been on this planet, would take current Ohio State linebackers coach Al Washington with him to BC.

Well, Ryan Day doesn’t expect that to happen, via Eleven Warriors:

"“If that’s something he wanted to do, I’d be very, very surprised,” Day said of Washington in his Monday press conference. “I don’t see that happening.”"

This is great news for Ryan Day. Losing one key coaching staff member from the defensive side of the ball is bad enough, but losing another one would be catastrophic.

Rumors have had it that Hafley would want Washington, the former Boston College alum, to take over as defensive coordinator for the Eagles next season.

Washington has built up an excellent reputation in his short time with the Scarlet and Gray. Known for his passion and energy on the sidelines, he took Ohio State’s most disappointing unit last season and turned it into one of the teams strongest.

In addition to the news he doesn’t expect Washington to follow Hafley, Day also indicated that he does not anticipate any other coaches to be leaving as well, again from Eleven Warriors:

"“I’d be surprised if any of that stuff happens,” Day said. “I think we’re in pretty good shape, pretty solid.”"

It’s going to be interesting to see how Ryan Day reacts now that Hafley was one and done at Ohio State. Urban Meyer made it very clear to all coaches that he hired that he expected a two-year commitment to the program before perusing bigger opportunities.

Coach Day has never mentioned or indicated that he has kept that rule in place. But will Day change his mind now that Hafley has bolted after 11 months on the job? Only time will tell as we see how assistant coaches in the future come and go.
