The Heisman finalists for the 2019 season were announced this evening. Ohio  State football players Justin Fields and Chase Young are among the four finalists who will be in New York for the Heisman ceremony Saturday night.

Fields and Young will join quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts at the ceremony and are just the 7th pair of teammates to be Heisman Trophy finalists in the history of college football. Ohio State is the first team to have a finalist on each side of the ball.

Although the Heisman will most likely go home with LSU QB Joe Burrow, Fields and Young should both finish in the top 3.

Fields has risen to the occasion when it has mattered most for the Buckeyes this season. In the Big Ten Championship, Fields was 19 of 31 for 299 yards with 3 touchdowns. He has put up excellent stats in his last three games against 3 top-15 teams in the country.

Against No. 8 Penn State, No. 13 Michigan and No. 8 Wisconsin, Fields was a combined 49 of 78 pass completions (62.8% completion percentage), 789 passing yards and 9 touchdowns. His 40 touchdowns to 1 interception ratio this season is nothing short of greatness.

He ranks 3rd in TDs and 1st in least interceptions among all FBS quarterbacks. However, with Burrow’s tremendous season Fields will finish 2nd in the Heisman voting and will have the best odds to win the Heisman next year.

Leading the nation with 16.5 sacks, Chase Young has asserted his dominance and the Heisman voters have taken notice. A sure top-2 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Young should finish 3rd behind Fields and Burrow.

If it wasn’t for his 2-game suspension, the Buckeye DE could have been a greater threat to LSU’s Burrow to win the Heisman. Young’s success this season resulted in breaking Ohio State’s single-season sacks record, passing Vernon Gholston.

Although he may not take home the Heisman, Young did bring the Bronko Nagurski Trophy back home to Columbus. The coveted trophy is awarded to the best defensive player in college football.

James Laurinaitis was the only other Buckeye to win the notable award in 2006.

Next. What a great week to be a Buckeye. dark

Fields and Young will represent the Buckeyes in NYC, but the most important quest of the season will be the preparation for the No. 3 Clemson Tigers in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl on December 28th. Clemson is loaded with talent but hasn’t faced a quality opponent all year. Expect Fields and Young to have outstanding performances against the Tigers.
