Ohio State Football: Buckeye fans need to be Bearcat fans today
By David Wysong
It is a jam-packed day for Ohio State football and basketball fans, but it is also a busy day for UC fans and we all need to be Bearcat fans today.
The Ohio State football team looks to get the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff with a win in the Big Ten Championship on Saturday. This is while the basketball team looks to stay undefeated and improve its resume for March.
Do you know who could help both the football and basketball teams? The University of Cincinnati.
I know many people think that as long as the football team wins on Saturday then they will have the No. 1 seed in the CFP, but what if LSU blows out Georgia, the No. 4 team in the country? Or what if both LSU and Ohio State lose? Then the No. 1 spot will almost certainly be in question and each team’s resume will be closely looked at by the CFP selection committee.
For the Buckeyes, they already have a great resume with double-digit wins over Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan. They also have a 42-0 win over the University of Cincinnati, though, and if UC beats Memphis on Saturday then they will be American Athletic Conference champions and will probably be in a New Years Six Bowl.
A win over a conference champion who is also in a NY6 Bowl? LSU can’t say that, so I think Ohio State would get the nod.
Now, looking at basketball. UC is 6-2 and has the talent to be a dangerous team come March as they are a top 50 team according to KenPom.com. Ohio State also beat them in the opening game of the season 64-56.
Today, the Bearcat basketball team plays Xavier – a top 30 team according to KenPom – and a win over them would give them a quality win, which in turn makes the Buckeyes’ win over the Bearcats look better.
The basketball team surely won’t have a problem getting into the tournament barring something catastrophic happening, but a good win over a good UC team could be the difference in a one seed and a two seed.
Today is going to be a fantastic day of college sports and we all hope that the Buckeyes win in both football and basketball. However, we all need to hope that the Bearcats also win in both football and basketball.
