Ohio State Football: The SEC just needs to face reality
By Jay Wilhelm
The people in SEC country just need to face the fact that the Ohio State football team and the Big Ten are right there with them now.
The Ohio State football team remains atop the College Football Playoff rankings heading into conference championship weekend across the college football landscape. Yes, a Big Ten team is No. 1.
If you are from the south, you probably say it every year. If you are from the north or even the west, you probably hear it and argue against it every year. However, it is time to stop this bogus narrative that the SEC is head and shoulders the best conference in college football.
Was it at some point? Of course, every conference that is in the power five group probably has been at one point in time. Just like the weather in Ohio, it changes.
Ohio State absolutely deserves to be above LSU in the rankings as of right now. That could easily change depending on how each team performs in their respective title games, but at the moment the Big Ten has six teams in the top 25 and the SEC has five. The SEC has four teams with losing records and the Big Ten has five. That’s pretty close for a conference that is supposed to be so much better than everyone.
I don’t want to hear from the SEC fans about how you have to play each other and you dominate other conferences. Let’s look at the last two bowl seasons for the SEC and the Big Ten.
On top of Alabama getting rocked by Clemson last year in the national title game, the SEC has a 48 percent winning percentage in bowl games the past two years. The Big Ten in that span, however, has a 70 percent winning percentage.
Why did I pick Bowl games? Those are games played out of your conference against other teams that are Bowl eligible just like you. That completely negates the perception that the SEC dominates outside of their conference they so strongly argue as fact.
I’m sorry your golden child Crimson Tide got knocked out of the discussion for a place in the final four this year, and you can stop arguing LSU is the only team that belongs at number one. You just want to avoid Clemson in the semifinal game.
If you want to win the title and believe you can, you’ll be glad to take on whoever, whenever, and wherever. The Big Ten not only belongs in the conversation with the SEC as a whole but as of this moment, they start the conversation.
