The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Clemson Tigers are the two best teams in the country while the SEC is overrated with each team having a major flaw.

Throughout the season the debate for the best team in college football steadily involved Ohio State and LSU. The Buckeyes are the most complete team and are No. 1 using the eye test while the Tigers currently have the strongest resume to elevate them to the top spot in the rankings.

However, the college football world seems to be forgetting about Clemson. The other Tigers have been quietly routing their opponents since the close win over North Carolina.

Ohio State and Clemson happen to rank in the Top 5 in points scored per game and points allowed, whereas LSU has the second best scoring offense but the 53rd ranked scoring defense.

For the first time in recent memory, the SEC is overrated. Beginning at the top, the Tigers have an elite offense led by Heisman Trophy frontrunner Joe Burrow, but have major issues on defense. LSU was shredded by Alabama and Ole Miss in back to back weeks and surrendered 614 total yards to the Rebels.

I bought into the LSU hype because, like the rest of the country, I fell in love with a facade of an explosive and flashy offense which in reality just masks the defensive woes. After watching the Tigers take on the Tide I still wasn’t convinced they should leap the Buckeyes. My evaluation proved to be correct after watching the Ole Miss game.

LSU did jump to No. 1 due to strength of schedule, but Ohio State has the opportunity to reclaim the top spot with a win over Penn State this Saturday. The Buckeyes are heavily favored, but over the last few years this game has been an absolute war.

Not to mention the Nittany Lions roll into Columbus the weekend before The Game in Ann Arbor. Though this game against Penn State is the biggest game of the year in terms of implications, next week’s heavyweight fight against That Team Up North is the biggest game of the season.

Alabama just lost star QB Tua Tagovailoa due to a heartbreaking injury, so unless Mac Jones’ alter ego is Cardale Jones I don’t see the Tide getting a shot at the CFP with their weak resume. Georgia has three great wins, but a bad loss against South Carolina plus the Bulldogs struggle to stretch the field vertically.

Auburn has a great defense, but the offense often sputters with freshman QB Bo Nix and Florida can’t seem to figure out a way to run the football. It’s time to face the reality that the mighty SEC is overrated this year and Ohio State and Clemson are the new sheriffs in town.

There is clear separation between the nation’s top three teams and the rest of the country. But even more so when diving in deeper into LSU, Ohio State and Clemson as only two have a defense you can trust to win a game.

Ryan Day and Dabo Swinney have their squads playing elite football on both sides of the ball which paves the way to a playoff bid if you can handle business along the way. On paper Ohio State and Clemson would appear to have great success on the ground with running backs JK Dobbins and Travis Etienne against a struggling LSU defense.

Next. 5 predictions for Penn State game. dark

LSU has become Oklahoma from a year ago where a captivating offense carries the ship until it sails into rough seas. The analytics prove Ohio State and Clemson are the two most well-rounded teams in the country, but how long will Burrow be able to carry the abysmal Tiger defense and keep them in the conversation as well?
