Ohio State Basketball: Russell proving to be one of the best guards in NBA
By David Wysong
Former Ohio State basketball star D’Angelo Russell is having a great year for the Warriors and is proving he is one of the best guards in the NBA.
The Golden State Warriors have a lot of injuries this season and are not having a lot of success as they are 2-11. Former Ohio State basketball star D’Angelo Russell, however, is having a fantastic season and is proving that he is one of the best guards in the NBA.
After averaging 13.2 points per game his rookie season and then averaging just over 15 points per game the next two seasons, Russell had a breakout year with the Brooklyn Nets last year, scoring 21.1 points per game and averaging seven assists.
This year he has built on that success.
Last night Russell actually left the game early due to injury and they do not know how serious it is yet, but before last night he was averaging 25.7 points per game on the season and had improved his shooting percentage from 43 percent last year to 45 percent.
These numbers prove that Russell is one of the best guards in the league.
Before last night he was 14th in the league in scoring and among guards he was seventh only behind James Harden, Damian Lillard, Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, Bradley Beal, and Trae Young.
His 45.2 percent shooting percentage was also really good among guards as it was better than Harden, Irving, and Beal. He had a 37 percent shooting percentage from three too and that was better than Harden, Doncic, Irving, and Beal.
It’s a shame that Russell is not on a winning team as he is playing with a bunch of young guys, but I think he has proven he is one of the best guards in the league this year by his ability to score. He has proven that he can lead a winning team too as he and the Nets made the playoffs last season.
Russell got a lot of criticism when he played for the Lakers as he was the No. 2 overall pick in 2015 after scoring 19.3 points per game in his lone season with the Ohio State Buckeyes. He has since grown into the player we all knew he could be – an elite scorer. Oh, and he’s only 23-years-old. I can’t wait to see what he has in store.
