Ohio State Basketball: Buckeyes earn big win over Wildcats
The Ohio State basketball team earned a huge win on Wednesday night. If these Buckeyes keep playing like this, a nice run in March just may happen.
The No. 16 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes throttled the No.10 ranked Villanova Wildcats last night 76-51. This game was just about over at half-time with an 18 point Buckeye lead.
Duane Washington Jr. had 14 points and Kaleb Wesson had a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards to lead the way for Ohio State. Freshman point guard D.J. Carton is looking like the real deal. He played solid defensively last night to go along with his 10 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds.
Just about everything went in Ohio State’s favor last night as they started the game on a 19-3 run and led by as many as 30 points. Head coach Chris Holtmann said this via USA Today:
"“Probably two or three times have I ever been part of a game as a head coach where almost everything kind of goes your way,” Holtmann said. “And that’s reality. Very rarely do you have games like that.”"
I think that I’m most impressed by this team on the defensive end so far early in this season. They held a very good Villanova team to only 30 percent shooting from the field and they held Cincinnati to 33 percent in last weeks 64-56 victory over the Bearcats.
This is a great resume builder for when it comes time to seed these teams in March. An early season top ten win may just give Ohio State a leg up versus a comparable team on selection Sunday down the road.
And don’t be surprised if this win catapults the Buckeyes into the top ten next week when the rankings come out.
A big victory like this against a respected top ten team in the country has me wondering if this Ohio State basketball team can make a late season run. Only time will tell but if the Buckeyes continue to play solid defense, hit big time shots like they did last night, and continue the development of freshmen D.J. Carton and E.J. Liddell then the sky is the limit for this team.
