Ohio State Football: Buckeyes looking to add another QB commit for 2020
The Ohio State coaches are intent on adding two quarterbacks in the 2020 class. Here are the latest rumblings concerning the quarterback room for next season and beyond.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and co-offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich offered 2020 three-star quarterback Jayden de Laura from Honolulu Hawaii a scholarship last weekend, according to Eleven Warriors. With four-star prospect Jack Miller already committed, they are looking to bolster the depth in the quarterback room for the future.
Obviously the coaches don’t want a situation like this season to arise again with the Buckeyes down to two grad-transfers as backups.
Jayden de Laura, already committed to Mike Leach and Washington State, is a pro-style quarterback prospect who has recently been garnering late interest in his recruitment. Not only have the Buckeyes offered him a scholarship but so have the USC Trojans.
247Sports Mountain West Analyst Blair Angulo had this to say on de Laura via 247Sports:
"“de Laura was one of the standout quarterbacks at the Pylon Elites 7-on-7 championships in Nevada, showing good timing, accuracy and touch on the deep ball. De Laura has a good feel for the offense and distributes the ball to all of his targets, is a strong leader in the huddle and does well to dissect defensive coverages before the snap. He can buy extra time in the pocket or escape without sacrificing much accuracy while throwing on the run.”"
Ryan Day sent Mike Yurcich to Hawaii last week to meet and see de Laura up-close. Not an easy quick trip for the co-offensive coordinator, so you knew there was real interest.
Yurcich must have liked what he seen out of the 6 foot 1, 190 pound de Laura to offer him a scholarship so quickly.
With Chris Chugunov leaving at season’s end, that leaves Gunnar Hoak as the only remaining quarterback with any experience to back-up Justin Fields. Ryan Day certainly wants to start grooming as many quarterbacks as he can because you never know who may transfer out, much like Tate Martell and Matthew Baldwin did this past offseason.
This offer most certainly means that Ohio State is not putting all its eggs in one basket. A scholarship was offered a few weeks ago to 2020 four-star prospect CJ Stroud.
Stroud, who holds offers from Oregon, UCLA and Georgia, is forecasted to Ohio State via 247 sports crystal ball predictions. He is set to make his official visit to Columbus in December, and expected to make a decision soon there after.
Also in the fold is 2021 four-star quarterback Kyle McCord from St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia. The teammate of newly committed Marvin Harrison Jr. was actually Clemson’s top QB target for in 2021, according to nj.com.
We all know commitments can change, especially at quarterback. See Emory Jones, Dwan Mathis, and Danny Clark if you want proof of that. So if Ohio State can land another one of these 2020 quarterbacks, Ryan Day will be certainly positioning his quarterback room up for success in terms of talent and numbers.
