Ohio State Football: Welcome to Heisman party Chase Young
The Heisman Trophy is awarded each year to the most outstanding player in college football. Since 2000, the Heisman has been awarded to only two positions, quarterback and running back.
The last 19 Heisman Trophies have been awarded to 16 quarterbacks and 3 running backs. After week 9, this year’s Heisman should be awarded to a defensive player for the first time since Charles Woodson in 1997.
It is certain that Chase Young is the best player in college football. Let’s look at the top five players in the mix to win the coveted trophy this year.
No. 1: Chase Young, DE Ohio State
Against No. 13 Wisconsin, Chase Young recorded 4 sacks, 5 TFLs and 2 forced fumbles leading the Buckeyes to a 38-7 win Saturday in Columbus. Already assumed to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Young’s season totals include 13.5 sacks, which leads the nation, 5 forced fumbles and 15.5 tackles for loss.
No. 2: Joe Burrow, QB LSU
Perhaps the most impressive resume in the country thus far, Burrow continues to dominate week after week. In a 23-20 win against No. 9 Auburn, Burrow threw for 321 yards and 2 touchdowns.
He ranks second in the country in passing yards with 2,805 behind Washington State’s Anthony Gordon.
No. 3: Justin Fields, QB Ohio State
The talented young Buckeye QB was put to his toughest test of his career with rainy weather conditions against the No. 1 ranked defense in the country. His performance Saturday against the Badgers proved that he should be in the Heisman conversation.
Fields completed 12 of 22 passes with 167 passing yards, 2 touchdowns and had a rushing touchdown.
No. 4: Jalen Hurts, QB Oklahoma
Despite throwing for 395 yards and 4 total touchdowns, Jalen Hurts’ performance wasn’t enough last Saturday as Kansas State upset Oklahoma 48-41. Hurts has been one of the top quarterbacks in country all season long though.
The good news is the two most recent Heisman Trophy winners were former Sooner QBs Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, and each suffered tough losses in their Heisman winning seasons against Iowa State and Texas, respectively.
No. 5: J.K. Dobbins, RB Ohio State
Jonathan Taylor has been a Heisman favorite since the beginning of this year’s college football season. After Saturday, it is safe to say that Taylor is no longer in contention for the Heisman.
However, JK Dobbins is in the race now. He recorded 221 total yards and 2 touchdowns against the best defense in America.
With 163 rushing yards on 20 carries, Dobbins performance makes him the third Buckeye to enter the Heisman race. Dobbins and Fields are the most dynamic 1-2 punch in the country and are proving to be a tough duo to stop.
In the last two battles against two of the Big Ten’s top running backs, Dobbins has gotten the best of Taylor. In the 2017 Big Ten Title Game, Dobbins rushed for 174 yards on 17 carries while Taylor only rushed for 41 yards on 15 carries. The Badgers RB was held to only 52 yards on Saturday.
