No. 6:  Florida (7-1, 4-1 SEC)

The Gators have by far the “best” loss in the country, losing 42-28 in a dogfight in Death Valley against LSU. Even with a back-up quarterback (Kyle Trask), Florida’s defense has led the team to seven victories and a chance to basically punch their ticket to the SEC Championship Game by beating Georgia on Saturday (would only need a win against Vanderbilt OR Missouri to officially clinch).

No. 7:  Oregon (7-1, 4-0 Pac-12)

The Ducks’ only loss of the season came in the last play of the game against a Top 25 Auburn team. Justin Herbert was expected to lead the Ducks back into the playoff hunt, but the Oregon defense has really led the team back into the national spotlight. The Pac-12 is balanced enough to garner this ranking, and the Ducks’ one loss is just better than Georgia’s.

No. 8:  Baylor (8-0, 5-0 Big 12)

If Kansas State hadn’t beaten Oklahoma, the Bears probably wouldn’t be so high in my rankings. But they did, and even with a weak non-conference schedule, Matt Rhule has the Bears looking primed for a potential program revival. If Baylor can beat Oklahoma and Texas (both at home) and the Big 12 Championship Game, they could find themselves a home in the College Football Playoff.

No. 9:  Georgia (7-1, 4-1 SEC)

I’m sorry Bulldogs fans, but that South Carolina loss isn’t looking any better and that Notre Dame loss looks like you were the better of two “ok” teams. A win against Florida would change a lot of things, but until that happens the Dawgs are worse than some people think.

No. 10:  Minnesota (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten)

Sorry Oklahoma and Utah, but being undefeated is difficult in today’s game (unless you’re Clemson), so P.J. Fleck’s Golden Gophers get the nod here. It’s been an easy schedule up until this point, but a win against Penn State (home game) could push Minnesota into the top six and place them among the genuine contenders for the Playoff.

Utah and Oklahoma both sit outside my Top 10, but if they win out they would be prime candidates for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Also, look for two 2-loss teams (Auburn and Michigan) to be in the running for the playoff if they win out and chaos ensues. And if Georgia, Wisconsin, and Oklahoma are any indication, chaos is abounding in college football.
