Ohio State Football: Top 10 by the numbers heading into Week 9
The Ohio State football team had an impressive win last week and moved up to No. 3 in the AP Poll. But according to the numbers the Buckeyes should be ranked higher.
Everybody by now probably knows which teams are ranked in the Top 10 in this week’s AP Poll. But how should they be ranked according to the numbers?
Let’s take a look at this week’s Top 10 teams and see where they should be ranked if you put stock in numbers, which I do. Especially this late in the season as the power teams have now played cupcakes and good opponents as well.
Once again, I’ll keep things simple and just use key stats. Total offense and defense, scoring average and points allowed per game. Like in golf the lower the score the better.
I’ll also include the team’s ranking in the AP Poll.
Florida No. 7 in the AP Poll: Total offense (57), scoring offense (45), total defense (25) and scoring defense (11). Total score 138
Auburn No. 9 in the AP Poll: Total offense (50), scoring offense (23), total defense (23) and scoring defense (16). Total score 112
Notre Dame No. 8 in the AP Poll: Total offense (30), scoring offense (13), total defense (41) and scoring defense (15). Total score 99
Penn State No. 6 in the AP Poll: Total offense (40), scoring offense (10), total defense (12) and scoring defense (3). Total score 65
LSU No. 2 in the AP Poll: Total offense (3), scoring defense (2), total defense (24) and scoring defense (26). Total score 55
Georgia No. 10 in the AP Poll: Total offense 20, scoring offense 24, total defense (6) and scoring defense (4). Total score 54
Oklahoma No. 5 in the AP Poll: Total offense (1), scoring offense (1), total defense (28) and scoring defense (23). Total score 53
Alabama No. 1 in the AP Poll: Total offense (8), scoring offense (4), total defense (26) and scoring defense (13). Total score 51
Clemson No. 4 in the AP Poll: Total offense (9), scoring offense (10), total defense (4) and scoring defense (8). Total score 31
Ohio State No. 3 in the AP Poll: Total offense (5), scoring offense (3), total defense (2) and scoring defense (2). Total score 12
Since I listed team stats a couple of weeks ago Alabama and Clemson each moved up four spots and Penn State fell five. Auburn also moved into the Top 10 while Wisconsin dropped out. With big games on tap this weekend it will be interesting to look at the numbers next week and to see if each of these teams are still in the Top 10.
