Ohio State football’s Justin Fields and Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence are two of the most sought-after sophomores in the country. Which one has more potential?

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State football quarterback Justin Fields were both the top two recruits from Georgia in the 2018 class. Now, they are both on national stages as Lawrence won a national title last year and Fields has the Buckeyes ranked No. 3 in the country.

Which quarterback could have a better future in the NFL though?

I think the answer is Fields.

I’m saying that knowing Lawrence would have been picked No. 1 last year if he was draft eligible. That’s saying a lot too since he was only a freshman.

Lawrence is six-foot-six and looks like he was built in a lab to play quarterback. Last year he guided Clemson to a national championship while throwing for 3,280 yards, 30 touchdowns and four interceptions.

That’s pretty darn good.

This year on the other hand, he has looked inconsistent.

Through seven games Lawrence has thrown for only 14 touchdowns compared to eight interceptions. That’s not too good at all.

Fields doesn’t have a full freshman season under his belt and he isn’t as tall as Lawrence, but he is still six-foot-three and has looked incredible this year.

Through seven games he has thrown for 1,492 yards, 22 touchdowns and one interception. He also has the ability to run when needed as he has gained 291 yards on the ground has scored eight touchdowns with his legs.

Lawrence only ran for 177 yards and one touchdown last year while this year he has run for 187 yards and five touchdowns—not bad stats for a QB but not as good as Fields.

I think the fact that both of these guys have the ability to play one and possibly two more years in college means they will be groomed and ready to go once they get into the NFL. They also both have the intangibles to be really good NFL quarterbacks.

However, I think Lawrence’s inconsistency this year is a cause for concern and I think that Fields’ running ability makes him the choice for the QB with better potential. The NFL is starting to fill up with run-pass-option offenses which fit Fields style of play better too. If I am an NFL team in a couple of years – give me Fields.
