Heisman Race Heats Up: A battle among 4 quarterbacks
No. 3: Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama QB
Good news and bad news. The good news is Alabama beat Tennessee 35-13 on Saturday. Bad news is that Tagovailoa exited the game in the second quarter with a high ankle sprain on his right ankle.
It was widely reported Sunday morning he underwent surgery to repair his high ankle sprain. The Crimson Tide will turn to Mac Jones as they host Arkansas on Saturday.
Despite leading the FBS in QBR (95.6), his Heisman quest will be a difficult journey ahead due to the uncertainty of his return. Alabama will have a bye week after facing Arkansas before Joe Burrow and the LSU Tigers come to Tuscaloosa.
No. 2: Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma QB
The Sooners QB has been a Heisman front-runner all season long. After a week 8 win against West Virginia, Hurts heads into week 9 with 2,074 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. His QBR of 95.2 ranks 2nd in the country.
The Sooners will go on the road this Saturday to face Kansas State.
No. 1: Joe Burrow, LSU QB
Joe Burrow was given 200 to 1 odds to win the Heisman Trophy at the beginning of this season. Needless to say, his play on the field this season has done all the talking as his current odds are 5-4 (bet $100 to win $125) to win the Heisman Trophy after week 8.
In a 36-13 win against Mississippi State, Burrow broke LSU’s single season record for touchdown passes with 29. He threw for 327 yards and 4 touchdowns with a 78.1% completion percentage against the Bulldogs.
Burrow is 2nd in the FBS in passing yards with 2,484.
Honorable Mention: The top 4 Heisman candidates mentioned above will be interchangeable as the regular season continues to unfold. However, there are four other players you can argue should be considered among the top players in the nation due to their outstanding performances through the first eight weeks of the season.
- Justin Herbert, Oregon QB
- Shane Buechele, SMU QB
- JK Dobbins, Ohio State RB
- Chase Young, Ohio State DE
There are plenty of players who have had outstanding seasons so far. It will be fun to see how this year’s Heisman Trophy race plays out.
