Ohio State Football: Who Buckeye fans should root for this weekend
By Alex Austin
The Ohio State football team is playing Friday night but there are games Saturday Buckeye fans should have a vested interest in with eyes toward the CFP.
With the Ohio State football team playing on Friday, Saturday becomes wide open to watch any game on the schedule – but who do you root for when the Buckeyes aren’t playing? Below are a few games that could end up impacting the College Football Playoff and the Buckeyes’ chances of getting in.
Now obviously with Ohio State at 6-0, if they win-out there is no keeping them out of the playoffs. However, only 30% of teams have been undefeated entering the playoffs.
No matter what the past performance indicates, the numbers point to most teams having a loss in the regular season. With that in mind, here are games with a high impact for the Buckeyes and could benefit the team, depending on who wins and what happens to finish out the season.
Clemson vs. Louisville 12:00 PM ET: Rooting for Louisville
The reality: I know this is a long-shot, but hear me out. Clemson comes into this year as the defending national champion, but they aren’t acting like it this deep into the season.
The offense has been sloppy and struggling for most of the season, and Trevor Lawrence has looked like a shell of his former self. Luckily for Clemson, they don’t need to be clicking on all cylinders.
The ACC is weak enough that they won’t get tested until the College Football Playoffs, which means all they have to do is win. An undefeated Power 5 champion will not be left out.
Ideal for the Bucks: This is exactly why Ohio State fans should be rooting for a Louisville upset. Clemson losing would open the door to another one-loss champion making it, or two teams from the same conference (SEC or Big Ten are the two conferences where this is a legitimate possibility).
The Logic: The odds are that Clemson does not beat a single team that ends the season ranked in the top 25, so would a 1-loss Clemson team with a terrible strength of schedule move past other teams? The playoff committee will have to decide that. Let’s just root for the upset for now and let the debate commence.
Believe it or not Buckeye fans should have an interest in a Pac 12 game.
