Ohio State defeated Michigan State 34-10 in their first matchup against a ranked team this season and once again proved their top four ranking.

No. 4 Ohio State (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) smothered No. 25 ranked Michigan State (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten), holding the Spartans to only 10 points in a game where the Buckeyes executed almost perfectly in the last three quarters.

From the outset of the game, it looked as if the Spartans would stay with Ohio State the entire game as the Buckeyes recovered two fumbles in the first quarter but only held a 3-0 lead heading into the second quarter after Blake Haubeil went 1/2 on his field goals (2/3 for the game).

The Buckeyes failed in their chances to make a big play in the first quarter but began the second quarter with a bang on a 60-yard touchdown pass from Justin Fields to Binjimen Victor, giving Ohio State a 10-0 lead and an offensive flow.

The Spartans answered with a touchdown drive of their own that displayed some of OSU’s deficiencies from 2018, as big plays opened up and MSU scored on a 20-yard pass from Brian Lewerke to Darrell Stewart Jr., who proved to be the only real thorn in the side of the Buckeyes defense, catching six passes for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Fields then was instrumental in the next Buckeye drive, scrambling for a couple big gains before connecting with Luke Farrell for a 21-yard touchdown, giving Ohio State a 17-7 lead.

The next Michigan State drive began with a big sack by Malik Harrison and Chase Young, who were once again all over the field consistently making plays, but a couple of big plays for the Spartans put them in the red zone.  However, a dropped pass kept MSU out of the end zone, but they still came away with a field goal to cut the deficit to seven.

J.K. Dobbins exploded for a 66-yard touchdown run on the next drive before a shanked punt for Michigan State gave the Buckeyes excellent field position to set up a field goal as time ran out in the first half to give the Buckeyes a 27-10 halftime lead.

Now onto the second half.
