Backup QB Chris Chugunov also came into the game for the final two minutes for Ohio State, handing the ball off to freshman RB Marcus Crowley, who performed well in his first reps at the FBS level. Jaelen Gill also got in on the action with a reception for minus-two yards as Crowley mainly ran out the clock.

The Buckeyes did what they had to do to get the win, but played average at best after an ideal first quarter in which they put up 28 points and gave up none.

More from Ohio State Buckeyes

The player on offense who deserves the most Buckeye leaves is Justin Fields, who was 18 for 25, passing for 234 yards and 4 TDs, while rushing for 66 yards and another score.

On defense, Chase Young dominated the Owls, racking up multiple sacks and several tackles.

And on special teams, Demario McCall racked up almost 100 yards in the return game.

Overall, initial takeaways are that Justin Fields is as-advertised, the defense is better but did make some of the same mistakes. And the Buckeyes need to keep their foot on the gas, even after going up by 28 in the first quarter if they want to prove their case to the CFP committee.

At the end of the Day, the Buckeyes’ new head coach did well in his first full game and made my 48-20 prediction look pretty good with a 45-21 win. A win’s a win, so on to Cincinnati.
