Ohio State Football: 2nd year players to watch
The 2018 Ohio State recruiting class was ranked No. 2 in the country and now the depth chart is loaded with second year players.
It’s difficult for true freshmen to crack the depth chart at a powerhouse school like Ohio State but hopefully many players are ready to contribute the following year. Plenty of players from the 2018 recruiting class are listed on the depth chart for the first game vs. FAU.
By my count there are 16 second year players from the Ohio State class, a JUCO transfer and of course the star recruit from the No. 1 ranked Georgia class. I’m using info from an article by Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors in which he provided the entire depth chart.
Let’s look at offensive players first.

Quarterback Justin Fields
Running back Master Teague
Wide receiver Chris Olave
H-back Jaelen Gill
Tight end Jeremy Ruckert
Left guard Mathew Jones
Right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere
Big things are expected from WR Olave with the way he performed late last season. Does the pass catcher Ruckert being listed mean the Buckeyes will be throwing to the tight end this season.
I had heard there was a possibility Jones could be moved to guard if this year’s top center Harry Miller progressed well in fall camp and apparently that was the case.
Now for the defensive players.
- Defensive ends Jevonte Jean-Baptiste, Tyreke Smith and Tyler Friday
- Nose tackle Tommy Togai
- Defensive tackle Antwuan Jackson
- Linebackers K’Vaughan Pope, Dallas Gant and Teradja Mitchell
- Cornerbacks Cameron Brown and Sevyn Banks
- Free safety Josh Proctor
The fact 2018 recruits listed in every unit is quite impressive.
It’s generally thought it takes at least three years to evaluate a recruiting class. I think with this many players listed on the depth chart already it’s safe to say the 2018 class was a good one.
