Ohio State Football: These quarterbacks will have breakout years
On a recent list, a former Ohio State quarterback, the current one and another in the Big Ten were projected to have breakout years.
Former Ohio State quarterback Joe Burrow and the current one Justin Fields were listed among quarterbacks to have breakout seasons by Steve Lassan of Athlon Sports. Another Big Ten quarterback he put at the top will keep opposing defensive coordinators staying up late.
I’m not well-informed on most of the quarterbacks on Mr. Lassan’s list but these three I expect to have big seasons.
First, let’s look at the former Buckeye quarterback who left the program as a graduate transfer before getting to the current signal caller. Then I’ll look at the one I expect to contend for the Heisman Trophy. I’ll put their rankings in as well.
Joe Burrow (14) was a fine backup for Ohio State but lost the battle for the starting job to Dwayne Haskins last spring. Since Burrow had to fulfill his academic obligations in order to move on as a graduate transfer, he didn’t enroll at LSU until the summer.
Burrow didn’t have much time to grasp a new offense or get in sync with his receivers so naturally things were rough at the beginning. However, he won the starting job and led the Tigers to a 10-3 record and a bowl win.
Expect big things from Joe Burrow this season.

Justin Fields (2) was the No. 2 overall player in the 2018 recruiting class. As a backup last season at Georgia he completed 69 percent of his passes for 328 yards and 4 touchdowns, and also rushed for 266 yards and 4 scores.
He will now be coached by quarterback gurus Ryan Day and Mike Yurcich and has a ton of weapons around him. Do the math, Fields will have an outstanding season.
Now for the quarterback I think will be a Heisman contender.
Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez (1) was very impressive on the field as a true freshman. He completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 2,617 yards and 17 touchdowns. Martinez also rushed for 629 yards and 8 touchdowns.
His play on the field last year was very impressive but the way he handled himself during Big Ten Media Days even more so. Martinez is very mature for a player his age as well as being extremely talented.
I could see a Heisman Trophy in his future.
Most of you know I like reading lists, and those by Athlon Sports are interesting as there is always great info. That always make me think about certain players or teams listed. These are the three quarterbacks on Mr. Lassan’s list I will be watching this season.
