Ohio State Basketball: Mike Conley continues to impress
Guard Mike Conley ran the show at point guard when Ohio State made it to the National Championship Game during the 2006-07 season and has had a stellar career in the NBA. He just keeps putting up stats and winning awards.
Conley averaged 11.3 points per game and 6.1 assists during his one year at Ohio State and was named first team All-Big Ten. That along with his outstanding play in the NCAA Tournament vaulted him to becoming the 4th player chosen in the 2007 NBA Draft.
He has certainly proven he should have been drafted that high.
As a rookie Conley averaged 9.4 points per game and 4.2 assists. Then those stats began to climb.
He has averaged at least 15 points per game the last five years. Last season was his best yet averaging 21.1 points and 6.4 assists. He just keeps getting better with age.
His career averages are 14.9 points per game and 5.7 assists. Oh yeah, in 2016 he signed a five year deal worth 153 million dollars which was said to be the largest contract for an NBA player at the time.
Conley also won the NBA Teammate and Sportsmanship awards this year. Don’t overachievers and nice guys just tick you off?

Now he no longer will be running the show for the Memphis Grizzlies. He was traded to another team where the nickname doesn’t fit the team’s location, the Utah Jazz.
But I think that’s a good thing. Moving to Utah may be the best situation at this point in his career.
The West looks to be wide open at the moment and the Jazz were 50-32 last season finishing 5th in the conference. By bringing in one of the best point guards in the NBA, Utah could become a serious contender.
Looking at last year’s stats you can tell the Jazz have offensive weapons, but four of the five leading scorers (all averaging at least 10 points per game) are in their twenties. Having a veteran guard like Conley will certainly help the younger guys when he gets acclimated to the system.
I doesn’t look like Mike Conley will be slowing anytime soon, and may keep improving if last season was any indication. Who knows, he may add an NBA Championship to his resume before he is finished playing. With all he has accomplished so far that wouldn’t surprise me.
