It’s hard to imagine some think the Ohio State football team will struggle with quarterback Justin Fields at the helm and Ryan Day to coach him up.

The debates about the upcoming college football season began to heat up this week, but why are people knocking on Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and QB Justin Fields?

I guess that’s to be expected from some this time of year.

We are only five weeks out from the start of the SEC media days and I consider that the official launch point for the season. Coupled with the preseason prediction magazines like Street and Smiths, Athlon Sports and Lindy’s Sports hitting the shelves across the nation, the intensity is building.

The holy bible, Phil Steele’s College Football Preview, will be out later in June adding more insight into which teams are contenders. I don’t think there is much doubt though.

With this in mind, I have heard some seriously bizarre predictions about Ohio State this week.

For the record, I am fine with bold predictions.  I make them all the time and enjoy the banter. But some just make Oliver Stone look normal.

Here are the top two:

Ohio State QB Justin Fields will bomb.

I understand some people do not like Fields receiving hype before earning it. Considering the attention his exit from Georgia received, the backlash is to be expected.

Preseason interest comes with the territory of being the quarterback at Ohio State, especially over the last 14 seasons.

Since 2005, the primary starters have been Troy Smith, Terrelle Pryor, Braxton Miller, J.T. Barrett, Cardale Jones and Dwayne Haskins.  That’s an impressive collection of quarterbacks.

The naysayers are pointing to Fields’ freshman season statistics and his unwillingness to compete with Jake Fromm as evidence that he will fail at Ohio State.  That is nonsense.

You know who else transferred recently?  The last two Heisman Trophy winners.

That’s right.  Baker Mayfield left Texas Tech and Kyler Murray left Texas A&M to play for Lincoln Riley.

While Fields could flop, the likelihood is small.  With Ryan Day and Mike Yurcich coaching him, I think the odds are high Fields shines over the next two seasons.
