Ohio State Football: Chase Young better than Nick Bosa?
By Ian O’Brien
Last season, everyone thought Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa was going to have a breakout Junior season. That is until week three where they faced Texas Christian University (TCU) in the AdvoCare Showdown at AT&T Stadium when Bosa was injured.
That is when Chase Young came in who many had been comparing to Bosa. The Buckeyes would defeat the Horned frogs 40-28 that day. My question is, will Young surpass Bosa or not.
Bosa ended up having core muscle surgery. But even with that injury he still had 14 total tackles, six for losses and four sacks in less than three games. Bosa would certainly have had at least 10 sacks during the season if he had stayed healthy.
Counting 2018, his tackle total was 77 and he had 17.5 sacks in his short Buckeye career. After his injury, Bosa would drop out of Ohio State to focus on getting healthier for the NFL.
Chase Young has been with the Buckeyes for two years now. His stats on defense are 51 total tackles, 19.5 tackles for losses, 12 sacks and two forced fumbles. There is a lot of hype surrounding Young right now and i think there should be.
During his two seasons at Ohio State Young has proven he can be a force, and if his strong play continues there is a chance as a full-time starter he can surpass Bosa at defensive end for the Buckeyes. But it’s going to rely on his health too.

Young also has a new defensive coordinator in Greg Mattison, who i covered in my Ryan Day article. Besides losing the last two games 62-39 (against Ohio State) and 41-15 (against Florida in the Peach Bowl) as Michigan’s defensive line coach, the Wolverines still finished 16th in defense while Ohio State finished 53rd.
And Mattison developed Rashan Gary into becoming a high draft pick. He can do the same with Young and the other defensive players as well as the Ohio State defensive coordinator.
With Mattison’s help, look for Young to have an even better year as he keeps getting better every single day. Bosa was a great player, but at times I think he was being held up a bit by former DC Greg Schiano.
The same can be said for Young also, but with Mattison running the defense it’s a new ball game.
Do you guys think Chase Young will have a better college season, and or career, than Nick Bosa or not? I would love to hear your opinion.
