Many expect Justin Fields to be the next great Ohio State quarterback but he will be challenged to have a better season than players who were in the QB room a year ago.

After J.T. Barrett won 38 games during his four seasons as the starting Ohio State quarterback, including a 4-0 record against TTUN, Urban Meyer and his soon to be successor Ryan Day had big shoes to fill heading into the 2018 season.

Ryan Day’s quarterback room consisted of three potential starting quarterbacks for Power 5 schools as well as the 15th overall draft pick in the 2019 NFL Draft: LSU QB Joe Burrow, Miami QB Tate Martell, TCU QB Matthew Baldwin and Washington Redskins QB Dwayne Haskins.

Those players have all moved on. Now Justin Fields, the No. 1 dual threat QB in the 2018 class who transferred from Georgia, will be the starter next season. Let’s look and see if Fields or one of the former Ohio State quarterbacks will have the better season in 2019.

LSU QB Joe Burrow

After transferring last May, Joe Burrow returns as LSU’s starting quarterback bursting onto the scene in Baton Rouge leading the Tigers to a 10-3 record. Burrows passed for 2,894 yards and 23 total touchdowns last season including an Offensive MVP performance in a 40-32 Fiesta Bowl victory against UCF.

Despite losing Nick Brossette to the NFL, the Tigers will reload at the running back position with Clyde Edwards-Helaire and John Emery. Burrow will have nearly everyone back on his offensive line as well as a talented trio of WRs in Justin Jefferson, Terrance Marshall and Ja’Marr Chase.

In Sporting News latest college football rankings, the Tigers are ranked #7 with two key matchups with Texas and Alabama.

Now a look at the player most thought would take over as the starting Ohio State QB at some point.
